-
The focus of this project is to ‘future proof’ New Zealand butter to ensure that it is a thriving export in the year 2070.
-
The objective is to find challenges that the butter industry may face in the 50 years to come, and provide solutions to overcome these to future proof butter.
-
Supervising the project and checking the progress are Nicola and Colin Brown.
Project context:
-
The process of making butter has changed significantly over the past two centuries.
-
In the past they would manually milk the cows and manually churn the cream to produce butter.
-
There was no form of refrigeration therefore they could not export overseas as the butter would go rancid. The market was local.
-
When refrigeration became a reality (late 19th century), the demand for exporting butter and other dairy products grew.
-
New Zealand moved away from the manual approach of producing butter this was done by the use of machinery for the processes of butter production.
-
Currently, they have machines to milk the cows. The butter itself is produced in large factories with numerous machines and stages to perfect the texture, taste and increase the shelf life.
-
As a result of the new technologies, labour and time costs have been reduced meaning it can accommodate for the increased demand.
-
Butter is now exported worldwide and stored for up to 24 months, creating a large revenue for New Zealand.
The butter industry has changed significantly in the last 200 years, and even more so in the last 50 years. Therefore it is reasonable to assume that it will continue to change and improve rapidly over the next 50 years because of advancements of technologies.
Project Scope:
The boundaries for our project is the raw materials such as grass to the exporting of the butter and everything in between.
Constraints:
Time constraint. The project is only set for one semester.
Management plan:
Weekly meeting days as discussed:
-

-
Wednesday 1-2. This time is set to check progress on delegated tasks.
-
Friday time is dependent on tests. Either 11-2, or 12.30-2. This time is to present information and complete group work, and work on the website.
As well as meetings, any member can be contacted at any time if they have queries/problems. If further clarification is needed the supervisors can be contacted.
